26 Mar Carnaval 2024 in Rio de Janeiro
Carnaval is a world-renowned festival, portraying the celebrated rhythm of Brazil. Tourists from all over the world go to Rio de Janeiro, aiming to experience something unique, a bucket list dream, a spectacle unlike any other. In Rio de Janeiro, the samba schools parade, leaving a trail of memories and electrifying performances. As usual, the highlight is the samba competition at the iconic Sambódromo (or Passarela do Samba), where the best samba schools compete for the title. In a thrilling display of creativity, passion, and artistry, one school emerged victorious in 2024: Unidos do Viradouro, securing its place in Carnaval lore.
Viradouro is a samba school originated in the city of Niteroi (neighboring the city of Rio de Janeiro). The samba school was champion of the special group three times: in 1997, 2020 and 2024. Tarcísio Zanon is the carnival designer who developed this year’s theme, generating his second title in the special group. Supported by the ancestral strength of African warriors and the swing of the “sacred python”, Unidos do Viradouro won the title with the theme “Arroboboi Dangbé”. In 2023 Viradouro was runner up to Imperatriz Leopoldinense losing by only one tenth of a point. So 2024 was a redemption victory culminating in exuberant celebration. In fact, last year’s champion, Imperatriz Leopoldinense placed second, in a rare case of inverted winners.
Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro is more than just a festival, it is a cultural expression that showcases the rich Brazilian heritage. From the elaborated costumes to the pulsating beat of the drummers, every aspect of Carnaval embodies the spirit of exuberance. As the city transforms into a kaleidoscope of colors and sounds, locals and tourists alike are swept up in the contagious energy that permeates the air. Whether dancing in the streets, marveling at the intricate parade floats, or indulging in traditional Brazilian cuisine, Carnaval offers an immersive experience like no other.
Almost a year of preparation culminates in a dazzling spectacle as each school takes to the grand stage, adorned in elaborate costumes and special effects.
